Health and wellness tips for a beautiful new year

‘Wellness and being healthy is not just an absence of being ill, it’s an overall state of wellbeing’.
– Dr. Rohan Bissoondath

Health and wellness tips new yearBeing proactive rather than reactive is at the core of Preventous Cosmetic Medicine’s approach to wellness. We take a multidisciplinary approach to our patients’ health by providing them with access to onsite registered dieticians and kinesiologists to support their wellbeing. By identifying risk factors and practicing evidence based healthcare, we aim to work with our patients to reduce their risks and improve their quality of life.

In addition to these comprehensive healthcare services, our blog is an information resource dedicated to providing patients in Calgary with the information they need to be the best version of themselves. On that note, in this article we’ve compiled tips to stay rejuvenated for the year ahead.

Get enough sleep

Getting a good night’s rest does more than keep dark circles and puffy eyes at bay. Evidence shows that getting high quality sleep has many health benefits for your body and mind. Research has shown that adequate sleep improves concentration, memory and creativity. Maintaining a healthy weight is also easier when you get enough sleep, as the compulsion to eat unnecessarily throughout the day is reduced. In addition to these benefits, sleep reduces stress, improves emotional stability and reduces inflammation which is linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, and premature aging. Oddly enough, getting too much sleep can negatively affect your health, so stick to the recommended 6 to 8 hours of shut eye.

Exfoliate regularly

Clear and Brilliant

Those dead cells sitting on the skin’s surface are doing nothing to enhance your look. These dulling cells begin to accumulate as the cell renewal process slows down with age. With this in mind, your at-home regimen should include an exfoliation step to maintain a youthful complexion. Looking for the next level of radiance? Under the expert care of our practitioners, in-office treatments such as microdermabrasion with HydraFacial®, chemical peels and Clear + Brilliant® will give you smoother, clearer and younger-looking skin. We invite you to book a complimentary consultation to learn how to integrate at-home and in-office exfoliation into your age prevention efforts.

Reduce or abstain from dietary aging triggers

Do you know the role that sugar plays in aging us? Sugar has been linked to the breakdown of collagen and elastin proteins in our skin which leads to premature aging. While making changes such as reducing or eliminating sugar from our diet can be challenging, the rewards to our health and wellbeing are worth the effort. Not sure how your current nutrition measures up? Schedule an appointment with one of our registered dieticians.

Stay hydrated

This is especially true for those of us living in Calgary’s dry and cold climate. When we’re dehydrated, our skin doesn’t receive the moisture it needs to appear plump and smooth. Fine lines, flaking and enlarged pore size are just a few of the issues that arise with dehydrated skin. Drinking plenty of water – at least 8 glasses a day – and protecting your skin with a moisturizer is essential to avoid dehydration. TIP: Integrating a hydrating serum is a great option to boost moisture over the dry winter months.

The next step – visit your doctor

As we’ve discussed, maintaining a well balanced lifestyle and using medical-grade skincare are important steps to stay young, but stubborn lines and wrinkles require a little extra help. This is where a visit to your doctor can be helpful. Neuromodulator treatments (such as BOTOX COSMETIC® treatments) and injectable filler treatments (such as JUVÉDERM treatments) help to smooth deep expression lines and folds for a more rejuvenated look.

We know our health is reflected in our skin and how we age. To learn more about proactive steps you can take to look and feel your best in the new year, Preventous Cosmetic Medicine invites you to book a consultation today. Call 403.229.0129 or email to request an appointment.
